This is something I use, and I thought it might be useful here too. I know you have the "x new posts" near the top right of the screen, but it might be easier for users to be able to see the latest 5 or 10 threads being discussed on the forum home page somewhere?

It looks something like this, but with the plugin above you can easily change it to 5 or 10 stories, and there is an option to show it on the front page also.
