Default Wordpress 2.3 Is A Piece Of Junk

In case anyone is thinking of updating to the new version of Wordpress, 2.3, don't!

It's so full of bugs and non-backward compatible new "features" that the older version is far better for now.

Quote:
Seems they've taken out some very old and long used variables and created a totally new "taxonomy" system http://codex.wordpress.org/index.php...3:New_Taxonomy

In doing so, now thousands of themes and hundreds of plugins no longer work. http://wordpress.org/support/topic/135564

And what to the developers say about the griping by two million dedicated users? Basically: Shut the hell up. What do you want for free you ingrates.
The WP team seem to have destroyed some of the loyal following they have enjoyed with this one, judging from the ongoing "arguments" coming from their plugin and theme developer community.

Hmm..I dunno, I have yet to have any problems with it and I'm running the latest which is 2.3.1

You're right about 2.3 breaking a lot of plugins. When I first upgraded to 2.3 I could not even log into my blog due to the new version breaking an existing plugin (I think it was the Google XML Sitemap builder)!

About the new taxonomy system, well, I'm not a programmer so I don't understand what's so good about it, but it's sad that the change broke so many themes and plugins. Couldn't they have built some workaround for this by somehow offering a "backwards compatible" taxonomy system that basically allows you to turn off the new taxonomy when using an incompatible theme.

I'm running nobsinvest with still the old 2.2.3, until the rest of the wordpress plugin comes back to be compatible, I'll wait out.

It's a tough one - in the long run the taxonomy system will be a benefit to developers. Right now, anyone without the "coding know-how" is relying on their favorite plugin authors to get updated. At least it only affects plugins / theme category options (although the variable $user_level seems to have disappeared too, which was well used).

When I made the upgrade, I had 2 plugins (plus one of my own) to make compatible, so it wasn't too much of a problem. Once everyone catches up with the compatibility issue, WP will be back on top!

Someone could make some good money taking "compatibility" requests on.

Oh for sure Simon! But I think most bloggers are just going to stick to 2.2 until the authors of their favorite plugins update the code to work with 2.3

For me the choice was obvious. I only use a few plugins and all of them are compatible with 2.3, so for me using the latest and greatest was a pretty easy decision to make.

I don't have any plugins apart from Simon's oiopublisher one.. and all my templates are dead simple ones I made myself... so it sounds like I should be fine for compatibility from what Allinvain says... but one reason I will still wait a bit longer is to see if any major exploits are found in the new version.

Haven't heard about any major problems yet but when an open source software package with such a big userbase makes such a big change to their code, you can be sure that the cracker community is on the job looking for a nasty hole to exploit.
